 Defining What a Language Is

LANGUAGE is simply a group of symbols used by a particular race to communicate themselves both verbally and in written form. There are lots of races in the world and obviously, there are also lots of languages existing. And more so, in each race, there is a sub-race which speaks a different tongue and the tongue can now be called a dialect.

In the modern world of global communication, English is not just the dominating language because most of the world’s Fortune 500 companies are headquartered in the United States and the United Kingdom (which both use English) but simply because two of the world’s powerful countries speak English. Even the United Nations, the world’s governing body or most of it anyway, which uses six official languages – English, Arabic, French, Russian, Chinese and Spanish – cannot stop English is the world’s most dominating medium. But English is not the world’s most used language though. It only ranks third to Chinese which is used by more than 900 million folks and ranks second to Spanish which is used by more than 300 million people. Still, English is used as the official medium in aviation so I may as well stop whining and arguing. Hence, Chinese pilots flying international flights need to learn to be fluent in English.

But since this article is geared towards persons speaking English as their first language, we may as well introduce the various languages one needs to acquire as a secondary language. After all, learning a second language is admittedly fun. After all, one can beam with some pride if he or she knows a second language fluently by heart. He or she can communicate with people of other races if one acquires a second language. Besides, acquiring a second language may come in handy if someone needs to communicate with a person speaking it as his or her native tongue but who cannot communicate in English. Another reason why people study a foreign language is because they are forced by their employers to do so. Now, that’s as blunt as it can be but the benefits of acquiring a second language can obviously outdo the hassles which actually are nil if one looks at its positive side. These persons are actually destined for foreign posting and who doesn’t need a promotion anyway? So these people usually pack their bags, bid their spouses and children goodbye for six months and head to the country where the language to be acquired is learned. Some of the not-so-affluent companies though would rather enroll their employees in online schools.

Foreign physical language schools and online schools have distinctive advantages when it comes to second language acquisition. In the former, the language educational institution immerses the student to a native family of that country where he or she gets supplemental language tutorials from the host family. In return, the student also shares his or her native language to the host family who are also eager to learn it as a second language by itself.
